SEMEN ANALYSIS AND COLLECTION
Takes away any concerns about the quality of the semen with a printout after analysis.
PROGESTERONE TESTING AND CYTOLOGY
Both are excellent methods to help identify the correct time of mating. Can be done separately or together.
ULTRASOUND AND SMALL ANIMAL MICROCHIPPING
The ultrasound can help confirm pregnancy and give an estimation of the number of pups. We would always recommend that, after whelping, another ultrasound should be done to confirm all the puppies have been delivered. We are also small animal microchipping qualified. There is a legal requirement that all puppies are microchipped and it is also a requirement for cats.
K9 Progesteron Testing
Progesterone testing is a crucial aspect of canine fertility care that helps breeders determine the best time to breed their dogs. The progesterone test is single-handedly the most accurate way to pinpoint the best day to mate your dog. If this is combined with observing behaviour around a sexually active male canine, the possibility of a failed pregnancy is minimised.
At our clinic we offer progesterone testing. You have two choices:
1. Contact us to make an appointment, bring your blood sample from the bitch you want to breed, and we will test it for you as you wait
2. Contact us to arrange to have a blood sample sent to us for testing. Test result on the same day sample recieved
You can send your sample through the Royal Mail postal service if you comply with DRG-61-EN Packaging instruction. We would suggest that you send it to us next day delivery before 1pm.
We would advise you to tape the top of the vial, wrap the tube in absorbent tissues, then slip it in a small bubble wrap bag, sealing it. Wrap that with more absorbent tissues and put that in yet another small bubble wrap bag. Then slip everything into a small box and pad that out. Please include your name, address, telephone number, and email address. When the sample arrives, we will contact you for payment and run your test this should take about half an hour. No lengthy delays so maximising your chances of having a productive mating. We accept samples from all over the UK.
PLEASE BE AWARE
At our clinic we do not draw any blood. This is a service that only a trained veterinarian or veterinarian nurse that is under the direct supervision of a vet can do.
K9 CYTOLOGY
During the reproductive cycle, the female dog goes through several stages, and the timing of breeding is critical to the success of the process. Cytology can help breeders determine the ideal time to breed by identifying changes in the cells of the reproductive tract, such as the presence of estrogen and progesterone.
Another benefit of canine cytology is that it can help identify potential reproductive problems. By examining the cells under a microscope, cytology can detect abnormal cells that may indicate reproductive problems, such as infection or inflammation.
Early detection of these issues can help breeders take steps to address them and improve the chances of success. Cytology can also help breeders monitor the progress of pregnancy.
After breeding, breeders can use cytology to monitor the development of the pregnancy, ensuring that everything is progressing as it should.
Canine cytology is an essential tool for dog breeders looking to produce healthy puppies. By identifying the most fertile time for breeding, detecting potential reproductive problems, and monitoring the progress of pregnancy, cytology can help breeders improve their chances of success and produce healthier puppies. If you're a breeder looking to improve your breeding process, consider incorporating both canine cytology and progesterone testing into your strategy. Call us and we can chat through the benefits with you.
THE STANDARD ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION PROCESS
A sterile device is inserted and manipulated into position. It is placed close to the entrance to the cervix and the semen is then injected through the device. The device could be a sterile plastic tube with a non-return tip on the end, or piece of equipment in the shape of a dog erect penis with the same non return valve at the end. Once in place the semen is injected, this makes sure that the semen is placed as close as possible to the cervix entrance. We simulate the tie process and keep the bitch as quiet as possible for at least 20mins and always advise not to let the bitch urinate for at least another hour after the tie.
At the clinic although we follow the same process each and every time, we have a number of devices and techniques we can use to maximise the chances of pregnancy
ENHANCED ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION PROCEDURE
The enhanced insemination process follows the exact same process as the standard process with some additional preparation of the semen sample.
The semen extracted from a male dog is made up of both the actual sperm and seminal fluid it can travel in. On collection of the sample, it is placed in a centrifuge and spun at 1500rpm for several minutes.
The enhancer has been kept in a warming bath at 38.8 degrees celsius to the ratio of one part of semen to four parts of enhancer. We manipulate the tube gently mixing the enhancer and semen together and then do the insemination.
The enhancer helps increase longevity of the sperm in the uterus of the bitch greatly increasing the chances of pregnancy.
CHILLED ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION PROCESS
The process of inseminating chilled semen is the same as the standard process. For a viable sample we offer two options:
SPECIALIST K9 SEMEN ANALYSIS
If you are planning on using your dog as a stud, semen analysis is highly recommended. We collect a sample of semen and do an initial visual check of volume and colour of the sample. This is done by the naked eye and under a microscope. We do this with all samples even if an analysis is not required especially if a chilled sample has been sent for use.
The specialist K9 sperm test is one of the most important steps to ensure your male is suitable for stud. The results offer an assurance to those considering using your stud dog. We evaluate canine sperm count, motility (standard and progressive), morphology, and other factors. These results are explained in detail during your appointment. Thanks to our experience and specialist technology, we can accurately predict the success rate of your stud dog.
STANDARD COLLECTION PROCESS
Semen can be collected from most males without the need for a teaser bitch or swabs from a bitch in estrous, particularly if the male has had semen collected previously. However the use of a bitch or swabs will help expedite the procedure. Here at the K9 Conception Clinic we always have a number of swabs we can use.
The Science
The dog is encouraged to ejaculate by a massage of the bulbus gland and the seminal fluid is collected into a latex collection cone. The semen is ejaculated in three fractions. The first fraction, or pre-sperm fraction, is composed of a few drops of clear fluid that originates from the prostate. Although this is uncommon, certain dogs may ejaculate several ml of the pre-sperm fraction.
The second fraction is the sperm-rich fraction. The volume of the sperm-rich fraction varies from 0.5 to 8 ml, depending on testicular size and individual variation. The sperm-rich fraction appears cloudy and opalescent.
The third and largest fraction is prostatic fluid, of which there may be as much as 30 ml. Normal prostatic fluid is clear and easily distinguished from the milky, sperm-rich fraction.
Once collected the seminal fluid can be inseminated in its entirety.
EHANCED COLLECTION PROCESS
Following on from the standard collection process is the enhanced option. The collection of the semen is done in the same way. Once collected, the semen is mixed with an enhancer before artificial insemination.
The process involves the original semen sample being put in a centrifuge and spun at 1500 rpm for seven minutes which separates the seminal fluid from the semen. The seminal fluid is discarded and replaced by an enhancing chemical which has been sitting in a bath at 38.8 degrees celsius. The enhancing fluid helps the semen stay alive in the uterus for much longer, increasing the chances of the semen coming into contact with an egg.
SENDING AND RECEIVING SEMEN
Prepping semen to be sent involves an extraction by the enhanced process. The sample is sent in the tube that it was prepped in with the top taped. The tube is then appropriately wrapped and placed in a secure cool box. The box is then sent by courier with a guaranteed arrival before 1pm at any address in the UK. Our advice would be to have it sent direct to the fertility clinic that is going to do the insemination.
ULTRASOUND SERVICES
Ultrasound is a non-invasive diagnostic tool that uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the reproductive organs of dogs. This tool has become an essential part of canine reproductive health care, as it allows breeders to monitor pregnancy and identify potential issues that could affect the health of the mother and her puppies. One of the main benefits of canine ultrasound is that it provides an accurate method of determining pregnancy. Ultrasound can detect pregnancy as early as twenty-one days after mating, however a far more accurate measure could be made thirty-five days post mating.
A post whelping ultrasound is also advisable to ensure all the puppies have been delivered. We can also provide this service.
K9 Microchipping
Microchipping is a vital tool in ensuring the safety and well-being of dogs. It involves the implantation of a tiny chip under the skin of the dog, containing a unique identification number that links to the owner's contact information. Microchipping is now a legal requirement for all puppies in the UK, and it is essential that breeders and dog owners understand the benefits of this procedure.
One of the most significant benefits of microchipping is that it helps ensure that lost or stolen dogs are reunited with their owners. If a dog goes missing, a microchip can be scanned by a veterinarian or animal shelter, and the owner can be contacted. This can help reduce the stress and worry associated with a lost dog, and ensure that the dog is returned to its rightful owner as quickly as possible.
Microchipping also helps prevent dog theft. Unfortunately, dog theft is on the rise, and microchipping can help deter thieves and ensure that stolen dogs can be returned to their owners. A microchip is a permanent form of identification that cannot be removed, making it more challenging for thieves to sell or rehome stolen dogs.In addition to these benefits, microchipping is now a legal requirement for all puppies in the UK. The microchip must be implanted before the puppy reaches 8 weeks of age and must be registered with a government-approved database. Failure to comply with this requirement can result in fines and legal penalties. At our company, we understand the importance of complying with this legal requirement and are committed to providing a fast and efficient microchipping service.
We use state-of-the-art equipment and techniques to ensure the safety and comfort of every dog in our care, and we register every microchip with a government-approved database to ensure compliance with the law.
